Dichroic glass is given its optical qualities through a process using an electron beam in a vacuum chamber. Many layers of a variety of metal oxides are vaporized, condensing on the surface of the glass in a crystalline structure. Depending on how the glass is held, the color of the glass can shift, creating beautiful reflective qualities. Sometimes the fired piece appears nearly transparent and colorless until it is placed on a darker surface such as the natural brass I use to wrap them. When some pieces are held to the light, many surprising colors appear. | ||
